The Columbia River Gorge is a canyon of the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Up to 4,000 feet (1,200 m) deep, the canyon stretches for over 80 miles (130 km) as the river winds westward through the Cascade Range forming the boundary between the State of Washington to the north and Oregon to the south. Extending roughly from the confluence of the Columbia with the Deschutes River down to eastern reaches of the Portland metropolitan area, the gorge furnishes the only navigable route through the Cascades and the only water connection between the Columbia River Plateau and the Pacific Ocean.

The gorge holds federally protected status as a National Scenic Area called the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area and is managed by the United States Forest Service. The gorge is a popular recreational destination.

Does anyone know the cost of living on or near the Columbia river gorge 2 hours outside of Portland, Oregon?
Q. I'm thinking of applying for a job at a windfarm near the columbia river 2 hours outside of Portland, and I need to know if I can afford to live there and still have a bit of money left for savings and fun. The job only pays between $16-20/hr, with overtime, which I realize isn't a lot. If I am willing to live in an average place, with a fairly cheap lifestyle (think spending habits of a typical 20 something except maybe a little more frugal), do you think I could have a comfortable lifestyle at that pay rate? It's either in Arlington or Moro Oregon.

Columbia River Gorge hiking.?
Q. If you were only going to be able to take one or 2 trails - which are the must do ones. Please nothing that requires verticle climbs - just the nice rather touristy trails.

A. There is one trail that stands out and is aimed for tourists and locals alike. You start from the Multnomah Falls lodge. You can access it from either I-84 at exit 31 or on the Columbia gorge highway. The short trail with just a slight climb takes you to a bridge that overlooks Multnomah Falls, which is the gorge's highest and best known. Other than that, there are quite a few falls that are easily accessable from the gorge highway. After doing some looking, my recommendation for you is to go to waterfallswest.com, then select Oregon, then the Columbia gorge. The gorge map will offer descriptions of the waterfalls, including a few that you will be able to access by either a very short walk or simply by parking in the parking lot and… [cont.]
