What is the hawaiian petroglyph or symbol for "mana"?
Q. Preferably for a tattoo design.

A. Officially, no one knows the real meanings of the petroglyphs because that knowledge was not passed on. All meanings are basically assumed today by what the images look like. You could choose the petroglyph of what looks like the warrior with a rainbow over his head. The rainbow warriors were mythic fighters with special mana that made them unbeatable. You could go with the niho mano, or shark tooth. It is the basic triangle of Hawaiian tattoo design. The shark is a symbol of power, and the niho mano has become a symbol today to show mana. Use rows of triangles as part of your design. If you really want to get a deeper meaning, understand the use of aumakua. These are guardian spirits, much like the totem spirits of the northern… [cont.]

Looking for an image, a petroglyph of an angel. I think its Sumerian.
Q. I saw it awhile back. Probably on the history channel or something. It's one of those pre judeo-christian angels. Very simple design. Prehistory maybe. I've been looking and looking. Can't find it. Need it for a tattoo design.
Asked by kenneth R - Fri Aug 8 18:18:16 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Most Sumerian angels were represented in a very stylized form, especially the older ones. You might try Assyrian or Babylonian images as these tend to be more artistic and look less childish. If you can remember the exact show, you might be able to get your local library to order a DVD copy from their interlibrary loan system. If you want to search online, just use the yahoo, google or MSN live image search for "angel" or even better "angel tattoo". See the sites below.

Q. I want to take some rubbings of some Native American petroglyphs. How do I got about doing that without damaging it? What equipment is needed?
Asked by Morgan - Sat Aug 16 18:58:03 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Short answer: Don't. It damages the petroglyph. A colleague hangs clear plastic over then then copies them with a sharpie. This gives a permanent record that can be used in the lab and saves them should vandals strike. Not that there's no rubbing and no transfer. That said the website of Hawai i Volcanoes National Park states: "Today, we know that any abrasion, scuff, or rubbing to the petroglyph image damages the feature by exacerbating the erosion process, which brings about the eventual destruction of the resource." "The website for Wrangell, Alaska has: An extensive body of research has shown that constant rubbing of the petroglyphs contributes greatly to their accelerated deterioration." Another problem is that the dating of the… [cont.]

Asked by friskygimp - Mon Oct 8 13:25:50 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You should start with a nice piece of stone and the right tools. If you want to do the work by hand, try a chisel and hammer to start with. If you want to get the work done faster with fewer blisters, a small air hammer would be nice. You might want a good marker to trace out designs before you carve too. Be sure to wear a mask over your nose and mouth so you don't inhale the stone dust, and wear comfortable safety goggles to protect your eyes from sharp stone chips. Sounds like a fun project.

A. its likely because petroglyph has not actually developed the firmware to do this ability. It may also be because you have to have a windows live account (costs money) in order to play with a gold member. however most games actually out right now on a dual platform, i do not think are live anywhere enabled (endwar is supposed to have that feature, but it has not been released yet) anyways hopes this helps

someone spraypainted some boulders near my house that had ancient petroglyphs on them, how can i remove?
Q. the spray paint grafiti without harming the petroglyphs? the petroglyphs are the type where they were "tapped" into the rock, the rocks have a thin coating of black oxidised rock and under it is lighter ,thats how they made the petroglyphs, so harsh scrubbing with a wire brush would ruin them and i think chemicals might react badly as well, any environmentally safe ways to get the paint off? these petroglyphs are over 900 years old it would be a shame to just lose them. is it maybe just better to leave the spraypaint there? it will eventually (in a hundred years or so)wear off on its own but that might be better in the long run for the petroglyphs. what do i do?
Asked by Twist - Sun Feb 10 17:49:38 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Who do these boulders belong to? You need to talk to the owners--whether private or the city or county or state or feds before taking things into your own hands. And get experts to handle the restoration if required. Your job may be to simply get the owners of the rocks to take action

Why are there almost -0 photographs of the Tanumshede Petroglyphs on the web? 5000 discovered since 1972.?
Q. I have been researching petroglyphs found from all over the world. I just read that the United Nations has declared Tanumshede Sweden, "A World Heritage" site. Archaeologists have discovered 5000 ancient rock drawings in a 3000 sq. mile radius since 1972. They have deciphered their placement is a star map, a map of the heavens. They claim this region is the, 'Dawn of Astronomy.' If these Glyphs are so important, and the UN has referenced this area as A World Heritage site, then why can't I find more than two photographs? There are hundreds of the Anasazi rock drawings in books and on the web but there are no photos of the rock art discovered in the Tanumshede region. I want to know why and if I should be looking somewhere else?
Asked by Sherry M - Mon Dec 31 04:04:56 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'm not an archaeologist but I would be interested in seeing those photos too. Seems to me that the UN likes to make big announcements and not back them up. I see a trend here.

A. Depends on how far you are willing to drive from the ghost town. Rainbow Basin near Barstow is pretty cool. Also, Mojave National Preserve has extinct cinder cone volcanoes and lava fields. There is some cool hikes nearby as well. However, NEVER go into abandoned mines; that's a death wish. Old mines are very dangerous. Steer clear unless you are SURE it's safe (guided tour, etc).
