Prehistory (Latin, præ = before Greek, ιστορία = history) is a term used to describe the period before written history. Paul Tournal originally coined the term Pré-historique in describing the finds he had made in the caves of southern France. It came into use in French in the 1830s to describe the time before writing, and the word "prehistoric" was introduced into English by Daniel Wilson in 1851.

Coelacanths fish is the same species that shared the waters with prehistoric fishes? or do y?
Q. Do you believe that this fish-Coelacanths- is the same species that shared the waters with prehistoric fishes? or do you think the assumption is based on a simple resemblance to the primitive fish? Explain your answer.

A. Coelacanths are believed to have lived in prehistoric times during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras, going by fossil records. They were thought to be extinct however a live specimen representing the genus Latimeria was discovered in 1938 off the east coast of South Africa. Since 1938 they have been discovered on several occasions, however they are classed as a critically endangered species.

What is the name of this prehistoric crocodilian?
Q. I was watching a documentary and it was about a skull discovered in the Amazon of a prehistoric crocodilian that grows to 50 ft, five feet tall and out weighs (they think) a tyrannosaurus. The name sounded like Poorasaurus or maybe it was Poorasuchus but I can't find anything with that spelling, which is incorrect. The latin name translates to "terrible crocodile". Does anyone know the name? I forgot to mention that they said it existed after dinosaurs were extinct. Needless to say, it is not Deinosuchus.

A. Would that be Purrusaurus by any chance? Seems to fit the bill - found in Amazon, 20 million years old, 5 foot skull, estimated 50 foot in length... Not sure about the translation - doesn't seem to scan - saurus meaning "lizard" in latin and purru seems to mean "ball" in an aboriginal language, which given the specimen came from the Amazon doesn't really make sense either. Deinosuchus however does quite literally mean "terrible crocodile" in latin. Hope that helps,

Why we can only make informed guesses about the meanings of Prehistoric works of art?
Q. Why we can only make informed guesses about the meanings of Prehistoric works of art? What do you think
Asked by Softwares_911 - Mon Oct 20 20:24:31 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The word "prehistoric" that is defined as relating to, or belonging to the era before recorded history leaves only oral history. When any paragraph can be destroyed by passing it through the filters of ten separate people the sum of the paragraph will be an informed guess. Any oral history being passed from generation to generation is at a apex if even informed guesses hold the minimum of the full meaning of the original oral history. Art is interpreted by each person who views it. When the oral explantion of what they believe of the art meaning begins its travel, it also begins to degrade.
